Tonight at 11:49pm PST is the exact moment of the equinox — just before the hinge between Friday, September 22nd and Saturday the 23rd. So today and tomorrow both, then, are proper holy days for those of us who follow the cosmic earth clock. Equinoxes and solstices mark the thresholds between seasons, these shifts in the outer alchemical cycle of transformation that mirror our own internal shifts. The winter and summer solstices are the extremes in the dynamic dance of dark and light, giving us the longest night and the longest day, kicking off the coldest and the hottest seasons. The fall and spring equinoxes mark the points of balance in the cycle, when day and night are equal in length.
Maybe different parts of you feel equal in length today, more in balance, and maybe not; maybe some peace is being brokered, and some peace is being shattered at the same time. No matter what, by honoring this threshold, we get to actively participate in the sacred geometry of our planet’s revolutions around our sun, our source of life. The honoring doesn’t have to be elaborate, unless you are feeling a little elaborate. It can just be a small gesture of honoring balance in relationships, calling someone who usually calls you. It can be sincerely noticing what it’s like to be alive right now, gently checking in on your own inner geometry, clocking any symmetry and asymmetry, noticing what’s changing and what’s needed. We are all already full participants simply by being here, living parts of the moving, breathing world.
